The UNESCO-listed stone ruins of a medieval African capital near Masvingo, and the source of Zimbabwe's name and national emblem.

Great Zimbabwe is the largest collection of ancient stone ruins in Sub-Saharan Africa, the dry-stacked granite walls of a medieval capital that once ruled a vast trading empire reaching the Swahili coast. Rising to the rounded Hill Complex and sweeping around the elliptical Great Enclosure, these walls — built without mortar — gave the modern nation its name and its soapstone bird emblem. A UNESCO World Heritage Site near Masvingo, it remains Southern Africa's most important window into pre-colonial African civilization.
