The Coastal Experience is Kenakare's most focused guided short break — four days that concentrate entirely on the extraordinary junction of desert and ocean that defines Namibia's Atlantic coast. Beginning with Windhoek's colonial architecture and ending at Swakopmund's German-heritage waterfront, the tour is bookended by two of Namibia's most appealing towns. The centrepiece is a full day in Swakopmund and the surrounding coastal zone: quad bikes on the dunes, a Walvis Bay flamingo catamaran cruise, and the finest fresh seafood on the continent.
Driven by a professional Kenakare guide through the spectacular Moon Landscape and Welwitschia Plains, this is the ideal introduction to Namibia for the first-time visitor with limited time, or the perfect standalone coastal escape for those returning from Etosha or the dunes.
Times are flexible — we'd rather you stop for a long lunch than rush to the next viewpoint.

Day 1 · D
Windhoek — City Tour, Old Fort & Katutura Quarter
Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport and meet your Kenakare guide for the transfer to your Windhoek city centre hotel. After a brief settling-in period your guide leads a 2-hour walking heritage tour of central Windhoek's best-preserved German colonial buildings: the Christuskirche (1910) — a striking Art Nouveau church in honey-coloured sandstone perched on a ridge above the city centre; the Alte Feste (Old Fort, 1890) — the oldest surviving building in the city, built by German Schutztruppe and now a national museum covering Namibia's colonial period; and the Rider's Memorial (1912) — a bronze German cavalryman that remains one of Windhoek's most debated and politically charged public monuments. Late afternoon: your guide leads a township walk in the Katutura quarter, established under apartheid forced removals but now a vibrant cultural heartland — the Single Quarters market, informal restaurants (kapana — grilled street meat), and the shebeen culture of Katutura's social life offer a genuine Windhoek experience far from the colonial city. Welcome dinner at a well-regarded Windhoek restaurant, followed by a pre-departure briefing for the drive west tomorrow.

Day 2 · B/D
Windhoek to Swakopmund — Moon Landscape & Welwitschia Plains (~365 km)
Depart Windhoek after breakfast on the B2 west toward the coast, crossing the Khomas Hochland plateau with its wide views over the central Namibian highlands. The road descends gradually toward the Namib before entering the remarkable Namib-Naukluft Park north of the main route. Stop at the Moon Landscape — a dramatic area of deeply eroded Precambrian granite hills sculpted by millions of years of the Swakop River's flash flood erosion. The bare, rounded rock forms against a pale grey sky create a genuinely extraterrestrial atmosphere. Continue to the Welwitschia Plains, where your guide introduces you to the Welwitschia mirabilis — a plant so remarkable it occupies its own taxonomic order with no living relatives. Individual plants on this plain have been carbon-dated to over 1,500 years old; some estimates suggest the largest may be closer to 2,500 years. They grow only in the Namib coastal strip, surviving entirely on fog. Stop at the Goanikontes Oasis — a narrow thread of tamarisk, fig, and oleander in an otherwise bone-dry riverbed, maintained by underground water from the Swakop River. Arrive Swakopmund in the late afternoon for check-in and a seafront walk before dinner.
A packed and exhilarating full day on the Swakopmund coast. Morning: quad biking in the dunes east of Swakopmund with a local adventure operator — 30–60 minute guided circuits across 100-metre sand ridges, through the valley corridors between dunes, and across the flat gravel plains at the dune field's edge. No experience required; briefing and equipment provided. Midday: fresh seafood lunch at a Swakopmund restaurant, fuelling up for the afternoon. Afternoon: catamaran cruise to Walvis Bay Lagoon — 30 km south of Swakopmund and one of the finest coastal birdwatching sites in the southern hemisphere. Up to 150,000 flamingos, hundreds of pelicans, and thousands of waders occupy the saline lagoon year-round; Cape fur seals are irresistibly bold around the boat, and bottlenose dolphins frequently escort the catamaran on the return leg. Return to Swakopmund pier as the sun descends and the lighthouse turns gold. Walk the famous Swakopmund jetty — 280 metres into the ice-cold Atlantic, with oysters and white wine at the jetty bar as the lights of the town come on across the bay. Farewell seafood dinner at a Swakopmund harbour restaurant.

Swakopmund to Windhoek — Return Transfer (~365 km)
Final morning in Swakopmund — time for a last stroll along the beach, a coffee at one of the town's German-heritage bakeries, or a browse through the crystal and gemstone shops for which Swakopmund is well known (Namibia is one of the world's great gemstone producers: tourmaline, aquamarine, garnet, and rose quartz are all found in the Erongo Mountains just inland). Depart after breakfast for the return drive east to Windhoek. Your guide narrates the landscape on the return journey, covering aspects not discussed on the outbound drive — the geology of the Khomas Hochland, the hydrology of the ephemeral rivers, and the remarkable diversity of bird species in the acacia belt east of the Namib. Arrive Windhoek in the mid-afternoon for the transfer to Hosea Kutako International Airport. Four days, two exceptional Namibian towns, and the extraordinary coastal wilderness that connects them.
