Beginning and ending in Windhoek, the route descends into the semi-arid south through the Quiver Tree Forest and giant Fish River Canyon, skirts the eerie Namib coastline via the ghost towns of Kolmanskop and Lüderitz, climbs through the dune sea of Sossusvlei and Deadvlei, and sweeps north along the Skeleton Coast to wild Swakopmund and the prehistoric rock engravings of Twyfelfontein. Arrive at Hosea Kutako International Airport and transfer to your Windhoek guesthouse. Your Kenakare route coordinator will meet you for a thorough pre-departure briefing: vehicle handover, GPS route activation, fuel and water protocols, emergency contact numbers, and border crossing documentation for the days ahead. If time allows, take a gentle evening stroll through Windhoek's compact German-colonial city centre — the Art Nouveau Christuskirche, the Alte Feste fortress, and the Namibia Craft Centre are all within walking distance of most central guesthouses. Welcome dinner at a Windhoek city restaurant to set the scene for your 25-day adventure.

You will be equipped with a premium, fully-specced 4x4 vehicle (such as a Toyota Hilux Double Cab) designed for Namibia's rugged gravel roads. While prior off-road driving experience is helpful, it is not strictly necessary; our team provides a thorough hands-on vehicle briefing and safety orientation in Windhoek before you set off.

This expedition covers over 4,000 kilometres on a mix of tar, gravel, and corrugated sandy roads. Reaching remote areas like Kaokoland and Tsumkwe requires long hours behind the wheel, high driver focus, and careful route planning between fuel stops, making it best suited for travellers who enjoy a genuine overland adventure.

How do we navigate in remote regions like Kaokoland where there is no cellular service?

We provide a pre-programmed Garmin GPS system with your custom route pre-loaded, alongside a highly detailed physical Kenakare Road Book. Your vehicle is also equipped with a satellite tracking device, allowing our base team to monitor your position and provide support if needed.
